Recently Released Prisoner deaths in Ireland, 1998 to 2005

The aim of this study was to investigate deaths following release from prison among individuals recorded on the National Drug-Related Deaths Index (NDRDI). A descriptive analysis of individuals with a history of imprisonment in the NDRDI from 1998 to 2005 was undertaken. Between 1998 and 2005, 130 (5.3%) of the recorded cases had a documented history of imprisonment, 105 of whom were not in prison at the time of their death.

Cocaethylene: responding to combined alcohol and cocaine use

Cocaethylene is a unique compound formed when alcohol and cocaine are combined. Cocaethylene has been associated with increased health and social risks, although understanding and awareness of the risks appears low. Scope to improve knowledge and responses within drug and alcohol strategy approaches appear important given indications of increasing popularity of combined alcohol and powder cocaine use.

More cocaine overdoses in warmer weather

When the weather gets nicer, frequency of cocaine-related deaths tends to go up, according to a study published last week in the journal Addiction. By comparing New York City mortality data from 1990 through 2006 with average temperature information for the region from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, researchers found that more people died of cocaine overdose when temperatures rose past 75ºF (24ºC) than when it was cooler out.

Drug chief’s warning to young on dangers of legal high ‘meow meow’

The dangers to young people of a legal high known as “meow meow” have been highlighted by the Government’s new drugs adviser. Professor Les Iversen said the speed at which the drug, officially called mephedrone, had become popular was “quite scary”.

The retired academic, who was appointed interim chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs after the sacking of Professor David Nutt, also expressed alarm at “soft” attitudes to cocaine.

Sudden Death in Cocaine Abusers: Study Reveals Role Played by Illegal Drug

Forensic pathologists have shown that over three per cent of all sudden deaths in south-west Spain are related to the use of cocaine. They believe their findings can be extrapolated to much of the rest of Europe, indicating that cocaine use is a growing public health problem in Europe and that there is no such thing as “safe” recreational use of small amounts of the drug.
