Prescribing heroin to addicts who can’t kick their habit helps them stay off street drugs

So far, doctors have had little hope of treating the 10 percent or more of heroin users who don’t respond to methadone, the standard anti-addiction medication. Fueled by drug cravings, those users often spiral downward into crime and diseases spread by dirty needles and unhealthy living.

EU court blow for SNP’s minimum price for alcohol

The Scottish government faced renewed claims that its plan to introduce a minimum price for alcohol is illegal after a decision today by the European Court of Justice.

The court in The Hague ruled that a similar policy to set a minimum price for tobacco in Ireland, France and Austria is illegal because it breached competition law.

However, ministers at Holyrood responded by saying it had no bearing on its pricing plan for drink although opponents of the policy argued that it was a serious setback.
