EU court blow for SNP’s minimum price for alcohol
No CommentsThe Scottish government faced renewed claims that its plan to introduce a minimum price for alcohol is illegal after a decision today by the European Court of Justice.
The court in The Hague ruled that a similar policy to set a minimum price for tobacco in Ireland, France and Austria is illegal because it breached competition law.
However, ministers at Holyrood responded by saying it had no bearing on its pricing plan for drink although opponents of the policy argued that it was a serious setback.
