Obesity and drug addiction share commonality

A recent study by researchers at The Scripps Research Institutepublished March 28, 2010, show that the molecular mechanisms that push persons into chemical dependency underlie compulsions to overeat, and thus become obese.
This “Study shows compulsive eating shares addictive biochemical mechanism with cocaine, and heroin abuse,” according to the study.For too many people then, bacon, candy, french fries, and many other fattening foods are like abusing cocaine, or heroin.

Research Associate Professor Paul J. Kenny and graduate student Paul M. Johnson devised a study involving feeding rats a modified diet resembling the type contributing to human obesity. The rats were served foods easy to obtain, high in calories, and fatty like sausage, bacon, and cheesecake. Shortly after the study started, the rats gained blew up in weight.

At the age of 14, Rob Richman thought he was ugly “from head to toe”.

By the time he was 15, he weighed less than 5st, had been admitted to a private psychiatric hospital and was being force-fed through a tube in his nose.

Parents, friends and the Southgate Jewish community were baffled as to why an intelligent, polite boy from a middle-class traditional family in north London had starved himself to the point that he was too frail to walk.

Kara DioGuardi and the “New Eating Disorder”

If you are an American Idol fan, you are familiar with the talented Kara DioGuardi, one of the judges. Last night, she was moved to tears by one of the contestant’s performances.

Kara recently spoke about her battle with an eating disorder. Specifically, she discussed her struggle with the symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder, which is generally characterized by overeating eating large amounts of food, feeling out of control while doing so and using food to deal with emotions instead of hunger. It’s not just about overeating. When your eating is out of control, causes you distress or is impacting your physical and emotional health, you may have Binge Eating Disorder.

Diabetes’ link to eating disorders explored

Diabetics, under the gun to better manage their disease by controlling their food intake and weight, may find themselves in the sticky wicket of needing treatment that makes them hungry, researchers said.

Attempts to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and prevent weight gain may suggest an eating disorder when the disease and its treatment are to blame, said Dr. Deborah Young-Hyman, pediatric psychologist at the Medical College of Georgia’s Georgia Prevention Institute.

What we don’t want to know about eating disorders

Five studies. That’s the complete scientific literature about the effectiveness of different treatments for eating disorders for children and adolescents. The largest of these studies had 165 participants. No wonder patients, parents and professionals flail around when presented with the options.

Dr. Jim Lock presented these and other findings at a Feb. 27 workshop for the public at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford.
